Established in 2005 by record-breaking polar explorers, husband-and-wife duo Patrick and Robyn Woodhead, White Desert Antarctica operates luxury trips to the interior of Antarctica, flying 36 guests at a time from its home base in Cape Town on a private charter for once-in-a-lifetime experiences including visiting the South Pole, summiting an unclimbed mountain, photographing a colony of 28,000 emperor penguins, climbing, trekking, and exploring ice tunnels.

Operating out of two luxury camps Echo and Whichaway, the company is already recognised as a pioneer in providing breath-taking eco-experiences in a challenging environment. The ambition is to maintain exceptional levels of service and hospitality, particularly the guest facing aspect to always ensure a premium luxury experience. White Desert not only provides tourism but also services the Antarctic science community.

 

Primary Responsibilities

 

Please note that the role is a 6 week contract role and attracts a daily wage that is aligned to the candidates experience and working in Antarctica.

 

As the Camp Manager of either Echo or Whichaway camp, you will be responsible for the overall guest experience whilst guests are in Antarctica. You will be responsible for the coordination of your team in terms of all guest activities and movements. You will be required to be in constant communication with the Antarctica Operations team at Wolf’s Fang Runway to ensure that our 2 core activities are achieved during each guest rotation, those being the Emperor Penguin and South Pole journeys.

You are expected to check the weather reports sent from Wolf’s Fang Runway (WFR) to liaise with your Head Guide and Maintenance team to assess the potential effects of the Antarctic weather on the sleeping pods, main areas and containers as well as all safe operations around Camp and the guest activities.

The role will be supported by a Hospitality Manager who will oversee Camp performance and be based at Wolf’s Fang Runway. The Camp Manager, along with the Camp Chef, will manage Food, Beverage and Housekeeping stock levels and will liaise directly with the Distribution manager at Wolf’s Fang Runway.

The Camp Manager will be required to travel to and from Wolf’s Fang runway with guests upon arrival from Cape Town and departure to Cape Town.

Key responsibilities will be to:

  • Ensure WD standards of service and hospitality are executed in camp.
  • Ensure that staff are adequately trained and skilled to perform their respective functions. Provide ongoing coaching, support and guidance to the staff.
  • Work alongside the Head Guide to ensure safety for all guests and staff at all times.
  • Ensure all medical and evacuation procedures are strictly adhered to when required.
  • Ensure that all staff understand the composition of each guest group (as provided by Cape Town team) entering camp so that all guests feel welcomed on arrival. (I.e. names, travelling groups, declared dietaries etc.)
  • To be the main point of contact for all guests, ensure expectations are exceeded and manage guest complaints should they arise.
  • Collect tips in camp, gift shop orders and communicate with WD HQ in Cape Town.
  • Manage stock levels and ensure that waste is kept to a minimum.
  • Ensure all medical and evacuation procedures are strictly adhered to when required.
  • Enforce WD policies and rules while on-ice.
  • Drive the WD culture amongst staff in camp.

General

  • From time to time, the performance of duties outside the sphere of this job description will be required, as and when necessary, dependent upon the operational requirements of White Desert Limited, this includes but is not limited to actively contributing to the daily maintenance of the White Desert Camps and ensuring a standard duty of care.
