THE COMPANY
Established in 2005 by record-breaking polar explorers, husband-and-wife duo Patrick and Robyn Woodhead, White Desert Antarctica operates luxury trips to the interior of Antarctica, flying 36 guests at a time from its home base in Cape Town on a private charter for once-in-a-lifetime experiences including visiting the South Pole, summiting an unclimbed mountain, photographing a colony of 28,000 emperor penguins, climbing, trekking, and exploring ice tunnels.
Operating out of two luxury camps Echo and Whichaway, the company is already recognised as a pioneer in providing breath-taking eco-experiences in a challenging environment. The ambition is to maintain exceptional levels of service and hospitality, particularly the guest facing aspect to always ensure a premium luxury experience. White Desert not only provides tourism but also services the Antarctic science community.
THE ROLE
This role is responsible for providing exceptional guest experiences through both hospitality and bartending services. The ideal candidate will work closely with the Front of House Manager to ensure a warm, welcoming, and enjoyable atmosphere for all guests. This position demands a blend of excellent customer service skills, creativity in mixology, and the ability to thrive in a remote and challenging environment.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Guest Reception and Service
- Welcome and greet guests upon arrival, ensuring a friendly and professional demeanour.
- Assist with check-ins, check-outs, and orientation of camp facilities and schedules.
- Address and resolve guest inquiries and concerns promptly and effectively.
- On flight days you will provide an excellent experience as a bartender/mixologist in our Ice Bar.
Mixology and Bar Management
- Create, prepare, and serve a wide range of beverages, including cocktails, mocktails, and hot drinks, tailored to guests’ preferences.
- Develop and maintain an innovative and appealing drink menu using available ingredients.
- Manage bar inventory, including ordering supplies, maintaining stock levels, and minimizing waste.
Collaboration with Front of House Manager
- Coordinate with the Front of House Manager to plan and execute special events, theme nights, and entertainment activities.
- Provide feedback and suggestions to improve guest services and experiences.
Camp Support

- Participate in daily camp operations, including meal service and cleaning.
- Contribute to a positive team culture by supporting colleagues and fostering a cooperative work environment.
GENERAL

- From time to time, the performance of duties outside the sphere of this job description will be required, as and when necessary, dependent upon the operational requirements of White Desert Limited, this includes but is not limited to actively contributing to the daily maintenance of the Whichaway Camp and ensuring a standard duty of care.
THE PERSON, REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
- Proven experience as a host, bartender, or mixologist in a high-end hospitality setting.
- Exceptional customer service and communication skills.
- Creativity and knowledge in mixology, including the ability to create unique and appealing beverages.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a remote and challenging environment.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Flexibility to adapt to changing schedules and requirements.
- A proactive and positive attitude, with a willingness to go above and beyond for guests.
- Physical stamina to handle long hours and the rigors of a remote location.
- Prior experience in remote or extreme environments is preferred.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Valid passport and ability to obtain necessary visas and clearances for travel to Antarctica.
- Willingness to undergo pre-employment medical and dental screening
- Commitment to the entire duration of the contract period, including potential extensions.
