Whichaway Camp
Whichaway is where our story began — a pioneering outpost born from curiosity, ambition, and the quiet thrill of stepping into the unknown. When our Founder, Patrick, first ventured across this wild stretch of coast, he found himself surrounded by rugged ridge lines, frozen lakes, and horizons that seemed to run without end. In that moment of disorientation he asked, “which-a-way?” and the name remained, capturing both the charm of the moment and the spirit of exploration that defines this place.
Set within one of Antarctica’s rare ice-free oases — a distinction shared by less than 3% of the entire continent — Whichaway reveals a side of Antarctica few imagine. Here, dramatic blue cliffs rise above a necklace of more than a hundred pristine freshwater lakes, their colours and textures shifting with every change in light. It is a landscape where ice, rock, and water merge into a vast, living panorama.
Opened in 2005 on the site of a former East German science base, the camp blends contemporary design with the cultural legacy of a place once devoted to research and discovery. Its minimal-footprint, cutting-edge pods sit lightly on the rocky terrain, framing uninterrupted views across this extraordinary wilderness while ensuring the site can be fully removed to protect the environment.
Inside, warmth and elegance invite you to slow down — a counterbalance to the raw power just beyond the windows. Despite its extreme setting, Whichaway carries an air of refined escapism; the kind of hideout where you could imagine James Bond taking a holiday.
